EU-SA APP II - Environment Matters in South Asia: Addressing Aviation Impact on Climate Change Workshop

This event will unite South Asian states to assess knowledge, address needs, and discuss CORSIA implementation and updates, new regulations, sustainable aviation fuels, non-CO2 effects of aviation, and cooperation strategies in South Asia.

04 - 07 November 2024, 09:00 - 17:00 (SLST) - workshop sessions
08 November 2024, 09:00 -15:30 (SLST) - bilateral sessions

The EU-SA APP II project's Environment Initiative is back with the final regional activity scheduled from 04 to 08 November 2024, in Sri Lanka:

  • A four-day workshop designed to enhance capacity building and support focal points from aviation authorities and aeroplane operators across South Asian states in addressing environment challenges in aviation.

  • The fifth day will give the opportunity to have bilateral sessions with the EU-SA APP II environment experts to assess current and immediate needs.

Target participants include members from the Civil Aviation Authorities in South Asia and relevant stakeholders from the South Asia region.

Workshop objectives

The workshop aims to update participants on the latest developments in key environmental regulations, including the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) and the ReFuelEU Aviation initiative. Participants will engage in practical exercises to deepen their understanding of the implications of these regulations for aviation operators in the region, particularly focusing on their impact on emissions reduction and sustainability efforts.

In addition, the workshop will facilitate awareness on non-CO2 effects of aviation, providing participants with insights into current developments at international and regional level.

As a continuation of previous successful workshops, this event will further assist participants in exploring the role of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), discussing the challenges and opportunities for implementation within the South Asian context. The goal is to equip participants with the knowledge needed to support the development and deployment of SAF, ensuring alignment with ICAO's long-term goals and fostering regional collaboration in aviation sustainability efforts.

Note: Each day will include breaks for networking, refreshments, and informal discussions. The agenda is subject to adjustments based on participant feedback and emerging topics of interest.

Throughout the four days, the workshop will aim to facilitate a deep understanding of key environmental regulations and sustainable practices, while tailoring discussions to the specific needs and challenges of the South Asian region. By focusing on CORSIA implementation, Sustainable Aviation Fuels, non-CO2 effects, and ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, the workshop will foster a collaborative approach to addressing aviation's environmental impact. Led by EU-SA APP II environmental experts, these discussions will align with the broader goals of promoting sustainability, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency in aviation across South Asian states.

On the fifth day, dedicated bilateral sessions will be held to provide tailored support, ensuring that unique challenges and needs are addressed in more detail.

From the EU-SA APP II, we wish you a successful event.
